Searching the Monash Staff Directory

What is the Monash Staff Directory?

Over the next few months the Monash Phone Directory program which is currently available to Windows users connected to the Novell Network will be phase out. This program is old and is becoming very hard to maintain as computer systems develop and change with time.

The good news is that a web based replacement is up and running. The Monash Staff Directory (MSD) is a central online database containing contact information about Monash staff, similar to an internal online white pages.

The Monash Staff Directory works with all current web browsers including Netscape, Internet Explorer and Mozilla.

How to access the staff directory:

Type the url address in your favorite web browser: http://search.monash.edu.au

From any Monash web page that has the Monash standard footer, click on the staff directory link

With the roll out of the new look and feel for the Monash web site the staff directory link has been moved up into the main header:

Basic Search

To search for a staff member enter their name in the format: First Name <space> Surname (case does not matter)

Or you may search for a department listing.

e.g. computer technician (full text match)

If you are not quite sure of the spelling of a name you may use the asterisk "*" . The asterisk "*" matches any number of characters. That means that you can use it as a placeholder for any sequence of letters or symbols

The following examples will not work because they are not a complete name and are missing the asterisk "*".

Advanced Search

From the basic search page you may also select an advanced staff directory search.

This advanced search page offers many of the same search functions as the Windows Telephone Directory that many users are comfortable using.

*Currently the advanced search is only available to users who are using a computer which is directly connected to the Monash network*.

Search Results

Above is an example of the search results. If you use a asterisk in your search and have multiple matches, the results will be displayed down the page with a total of records found listed at the top and bottom of the search results display.
