Support needed for a University site licence for SAS

SAS: Business Intelligence Software and Predictive Analytics

SAS provides a scalable, integrated software environment specially designed for data access, transformation and reporting. It includes a fourth-generation programming language; ready-to-use programs for data manipulation, information storage and retrieval, descriptive statistics and report writing; and a powerful macro facility that reduces programming time and maintenance headaches.

Monash is considering a University site licence that will allow all staff to access SAS software. But  the University requires financial support from interested Faculties.

The site licence will include:

  • Base SAS
  • Enterprise Guide
  • AppDev Studio
  • SAS/STAT
  • SAS/ETS
  • SAS/GRAPH
  • SAS/IML
  • SAS/INSIGHT
  • SAS/FSP
  • Access to ODBC
  • Access to PC File Formats
  • Access to OLE DB
  • SAS/CONNECT

If you would like to support a SAS site licence, please email software@med.monash.edu.au by Tuesday February 17, 2009, 5:00pm

Please include if you are currently using SAS or if you would like to use the product and how many computers in your office / laboratory / team would use this software if a site licence was initiated.

NEVER respond to requests for your computer passwords!

There has been another round of e-mails targeted at Monash staff and students requesting authcate usernames and passwords.

Please note that Monash University, banks and financial institutions etc will NEVER ask for your account password via email or via telephone.

As these emails are an increasingly common problem, we need all staff to take notice of the safe
e-mail handling procedures and simply delete these fake, but official looking, e-mails.

These procedures can be found here:

Why am I receiving bounced emails from emails I did not send?

Occasionally staff will receive bounced return emails from emails that they did not send. These emails will have the staff members correct address as the sender.

This is nearly always due to an infected computer, somewhere in the world, that has acquired your email address to use as an alias. The virus normally gets the address from the infected machines local address book.

There is no way for the infected machine to be identified. And so the emails can take up to 4 weeks to stop, depending on how long before the infected computer is identified as being infected by the owner.

And staff should always ensure that they follow safe email practices as per Monash ITS's recommendations:

Computer worms: Everything you need to know

"A computer worm is a software program that is designed to copy itself from one computer to another, without human interaction. Unlike a computer virus, a worm can copy itself automatically.

Worms can replicate in great volume. For example, a worm can send out copies of itself to every contact in your e-mail address book, and then it can send itself to all of the contacts in their e-mail address books."

Update: supply of IT equipment to Monash University by Leading Solutions

Over the last few months Leading Solutions, one of Monash’s endorsed suppliers of IT equipment and services including HP desktops and laptops, has been unable to deliver goods to Monash in a timely manner. Monash has been a client of Leading Solutions for over 10 years and this is the first time such a situation has occurred.

Leading Solutions have communicated to us that they have experienced long delays in the shipment of products to due to:

*  an extraordinarily high level of client orders being placed during the November-December period as clients tried to beat imminent vendor price increases due to the devaluation of the Australian dollar

* pressure to reduce all credit facilities, industry wide, due to the impact of the current global economical environment, which in turn has meant that their available trading terms have been constrained.

Monash staff have been working closely with Leading Solutions and HP to address these problems and we can now confirm that Leading solutions is now in a position to accelerate the release of back orders and has assured us that in future all orders will be met within reasonable time frames.

ITS will continue to work with Leading Solutions to address communication and supply concerns in addition these service delivery expectations will be addressed when the new contract is negotiated later this year with whichever suppliers are successful.

For more information about delivery of outstanding orders please contact Leading Solutions on 9848 8000 and to discuss any concerns regarding Monash endorsed IT equipment and service suppliers please contact Teresa Pearce on ext 56303.
